Should I file?

You can get an extension if you need more time

It's totally okay to ask for more time to file your taxes. There's no penalty for asking for an extension. There's even an easy, official way to do it.

Can't file by April 18? Request an extension.

You can get an extension until October 16, 2023 to file your 2022 taxes.

Ask a tax preparer for help, or do it yourself here.

Remember, you still have to file for an extension by April 18, 2023.

If you owe money on your taxes and can't pay in full, get on a payment plan by April 18, 2023 to avoid penalties.

If you can’t pay on time or can't start a payment plan, don’t worry. There will be a fine but you won’t go to jail.
