Should I file?

You should file your return as soon as possible regardless of your reason for not filing.

There may be many reasons why you didn't file a tax return last year, but if you're unsure you can use this IRS tool to figure out if you were required to file a return.

If the IRS owes you money

You should file right away. You have 3 years to claim your money (by filing) before you lose it forever. You won't be charged a late fee.

If you owe the IRS

You have to file taxes. You may get charged a late fee. It depends on the reason why you did not pay or file your taxes. You might be able to claim “reasonable causes,” things like serious illness or a natural disaster.
